Online Education Certificates - What Are They?

Online education certificates are academic or professional certificates that are granted to students who successfully complete a course of study that is offered through the Internet. Online education is continuously gaining more and more popularity, as the Internet becomes a bigger and bigger part of our daily lives. Online education courses of study are appealing to people who are interested in gaining a professional or academic qualification but do not have the time to attend a campus program. By enrolling in an internet education certificate program, students of the program are able to work full-time and work on their online education certificate requirements part-time from their homes in the evenings and weekends, or at other times that suits them. Online education programs are also appealing to students who have other commitments, such as parents of children, whose priority is taking care of their children and families. Another appealing aspect of internet education certificate programs is that they do not require relocation as all classes are conducted online. This allows one to enroll in a program that would otherwise be unavailable due to distance.
As online education is becoming so prevalent, many institutions are offering education certificates in a variety of disciplines. Some online programs are offered by degree granting institutions, while others are granted by professional organizations or community colleges that grant certificates and diplomas. Many traditional campus colleges have internet educational programs, and there are also a number of institutions that offer only online programs and do not have a campus.
Online education certificates from accredited institutions carry academic value. Many employers are recognizing the value of internet education certificates, although some employers remain conservative, and prefer a traditionally acquired certificate. On the other hand, there are employers who encourage their employees to enroll in online programs to enhance their skills, as enhanced employee skills are beneficial to the employer. Some employers may even pay their employees' online education tuition fees. However, when considering an online program, it is important to ensure that the online program is reputable. There are many companies that will allow customers to purchase degrees as well as certificates without completing any work. Certifications from such companies are a waste of money as they do not carry any merit. Internet education certificates can allow one to learn new skills or academic experience. They can also greatly improve one's career opportunities and increase chances for professional growth in the ever so competitive workplace.

Online Education Tuition Fees Vs Traditional Education Tuition Fees

While online education is quite common these days, the fees are something you do not hear or find much of information about. In comparison, many people have a pretty good idea about how much a traditional college education costs. A number of factors may determine the tuition for traditional colleges. Some of these factors are whether the school is private or public, and the reputation and prestige of the school. The program and area of study and how much in demand it is are also aspects that may be indicators of tuition. Even if people do not have a general idea about the costs of obtaining an education through a traditional educational institution, there are plenty of resources available, so it is not really difficult to acquire information about tuition fees for traditional education. This is not the case for internet tuition fees, where there is plenty of general information about online programs, but information about online tuition is not quite as abundant.
The truth is, just as with the tuition fees of traditional educational programs, online tuition fees can vary. Generally, public schools cost much less than private schools, however, with when it comes to online education tuition fees, some public schools increase their tuition fees because of the convenience associated with obtaining an online education. Internet education tuition of programs that are in demand and popular may be higher than average. Online tuition varies by program and institution. However, there are other costs associated with education that one should consider. Online education does not require relocation to campus or even transportation costs associated with commuting, so one would save on accommodation costs and the costs of travelling back home. Another benefit of online education is that it allows you to work or hold a job while completing studies, as online education allows for more time flexibility. This is beneficial as even though online education tuition fees for a program might be close to the tuition for an equivalent program that is offered through traditional means, the income through the job can greatly ease the financial burden. When considering any type of education and the costs associated with it, it is important to note down all the costs besides the tuition fees, in order to get a good idea of the overall cost of the education. For some individuals an online education might be the better option, while for others, attending a traditional program might be the better option.

Science Fair Project Ideas - Quick and Easy Project #5 - Crystal Radio

Of all the fun science fair project ideas, this one is my favorite for students that want to learn more about modern communication techniques and technologies. Through this experiment, students will build their own radios that actually work and can be tuned. This is also one of the cool science fair project ideas for students that are interested in technology and engineering, as well as communications.
Like all science fair project ideas, this project requires some materials to gather in advance, but the cost is still under $50. Also, students need to be careful that they are safe when working with any kind of electricity.
Objective:
Through this experiment, students will build a radio receiver from the ground-up. They will also fine-tune the radio to improve its performance.
Introduction:
Radios are an integral part of our culture. They help us communicate across the same house or across an entire world. Using this crystal radio, students will understand the fundamentals behind building a functional radio system.
Terms and Concepts You'll Need to Know:
This experiment relies on a series of terms and concepts that students will learn before or during the experiment, including the following:
  • Radio frequency and radio wave
  • FM radio frequency (amplitude modulation)
  • Resonance
  • Detector
  • Diode
  • Power and electricity
  • Antenna
  • Tuner
Materials You'll Need:
To complete this project, you'll need a variety of materials that may take awhile to gather, including:
  • 1 round oatmeal box
  • 1 wooden mounting board
  • 1 spool of plastic insulated wire (100 feet)
  • 1 germanium diode
  • 1 47 kohm resistor
  • 1 alligator clip
  • 1 ceramic earphone
  • 4 fahnestock clips (optional)
  • 1 multimeter
Procedure:
In order to perform this procedure, you may want to have a parent present. As with many science fair project ideas, safety should come first.
  1. Thread wire through 2 small holes that you poke about 1/2 an inch down into the oatmeal box. The wire should come out on the outside of the box. Use about a foot of the wire on the outside of the box to use as the connection to the circuit. Take the remaining wire inside the box so it does not slip.
  2. Wrap the wire around the box 5 times. Remove some of the plastic insulation to twist the wires together.
  3. Make wraps every 5 turns until you reach 40 turns total.
  4. Once you reach 40 turns, poke another 2 holes into the box. Cut another foot of the wire off in order to leave extra wire on the outside of the box. Push the wire back through the hole so that it comes out on the exterior of the box. Take the wire on the inside of the box.
  5. Use an antenna and ground. This can be any wire that is not insulated. Place the antenna as high as possible, but not near electrical wires.
  6. Ground the antenna to a water pipe or metal rod that is at least 2 feet underneath the ground.
  7. Hook the wire to an alligator clip and a center tap. Hook the wire again to the earphone. Listen until you hear a noise. You may need to modify the radio to hear a noise if you do not hear it at first.
This is one of the great science fair project ideas, but it may take awhile to build and perfect. Always put safety first and work with a parent to make sure you are completely safe. Finally - have fun!

Science Fair Project Ideas - Quick and Easy Project Number 1 - Parachutes - Part 2

he Experiment
This is part 2 of the science fair project ideas article "Science fair project ideas - Quick and easy project #1 - Parachutes - Part 1."
After you have all the materials you will need, you are ready to start. Here is a list of the steps you will take to do your project.
1. You will make each parachute out of the garbage bags. First you want to cut the garbage bags to make a flat sheet of plastic.
2. You will be making several parachutes, each of a different size. You will make the parachutes square shape to make all four sides the same length. In this there are 4 sizes listed for you to make your parachutes by.
Parachute # Length of each side (cm) Surface area (cu. cm)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1 20 400
2 30 900
3 40 1600
4 50 2500
3. Using the garbage bags you made into flat sheets of plastic, cut out one of each of the four different sizes listed in the chart above.
4. Tie a knot in each of the four corners of each of your squares. These knots will be your anchor for the string.
5. Cut your string in 40 cm lengths. You will need four pieces of string for each of your parachutes.
6. Tie the end of one piece of string around each one of the knots on all four of your parachutes. Make sure the string is right above the knot.
7. Hold your parachute in the center of the plastic in one hand, and pull all four strings with the other hand to gather them together. Tie the free end of all four pieces of string together with an overhand knot.
8. With the twist ties, attach four washers to the bundle of strings on all four of your parachutes. Make sure all four of your parachutes have an equal number of washers or the results of your experiment will not be correct.
9. Choose a good spot to make your tests. Some of the places you might look for would be a secure balcony, a deck on a jungle gym in the park, or a platform that is in a safe place. Your parents or teacher may have a suggestion for you.
10. After you have found a good spot, grab your stopwatch and your parachutes. Drop your parachutes one at a time from your platform and use the stopwatch to see how many seconds it takes for it to reach the ground. If the parachute does not open on the first try, just do that test again. Test each parachute three times and calculate the average for each parachute. To do this you take the three test results of one parachute and add all of those times together and then divide by 3. That will be the average for that parachute. It is a good idea to make a table similar to the one shown below for all your data. Remember, all good science fair project ideas and topics will have carefully recorded data.
Parachute # Trial 1 (sec) Trial 2 (sec) Trial 3 (sec) Average time (sec)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1
2
3
4
11. You may want to male a graph of your data. To do this you will make a line graph of surface area of the parachute vs. time it took to land on the ground. Start by making a scale of the surface area using square cm on the left side of the graph, which will be y-axis and a time scale in seconds at the bottom of your graph which will be x-axis. Place a dot where your data intersects and then connect the dots. You may find your line will slope up or down. What does this information tell you? What conclusions can you draw from this?
There are several variations you can make to this experiment. The results with the variations will not necessarily be the same as the results you received from the variation you used.
Load - you can change the number of washers, which will change the weight of the load.
Height - You can drop the parachutes from a higher distance from the ground
String length - You can make the strings on the parachutes shorter or longer.
String Weight - Try using a thinner or thicker string
Material - Try something other than plastic
Shape - Make the parachutes round, triangle, etc instead of square.
Most of all have fun with your experiment. I'm hoping you found this one of my science fair ideas was interesting. New Technologies and Small Business Offer Solutions to Job Losses

Emerging technologies of nanotechnology, biotechnology, information technology and cognitive science can produce a fundamental change in our world. These technologies also offer numerous business opportunities. Unlike conventional technologies, the new technologies are knowledge-oriented rather than equipment oriented.
What knowledge orientation means is that if you have the know-how, or can hire someone with required know-how, you can often start your small business with little investment. For example, if you know how to develop custom business applications, you can start off with an inexpensive computer and a few software tools. Get a client, study the requirements, design a system to meet those requirements, code and test the system, implement it and support it till the client is happy.
You will notice that most of the work involved is brain work, not machine operations or raw materials processing. This is what we mean by knowledge industry. Just like in the information technology example above, the other technologies are also primarily knowledge-intensive.
A Look at the new Technologies
Nanotechnology works with atoms and molecules. You go to these fundamental units of materials and try to modify their structure to create new materials with customized properties. Though knowledge is what you need most, working at nano scale, i.e. at one billionth of a meter, will require expensive and sophisticated equipment like electron microscope (ordinary microscopes won't help you).
Instead of working at these fundamental levels, if you have the know-how, you can get nanoparticles from suppliers and use these to produce a novel product. For example, self-cleaning glass sheets have been developed with a nanoparticle based coating that breaks down dust, which is then washed off the next time some moisture falls on the glass.
Biotechnology works with living organisms such as plants, animals and humans. Though techniques like tissue culture also fall under this definition, modern biotechnology focuses on working with cells and DNA. It is the genes in the DNA that determine the characteristics of the organisms. Modify the genes and you can modify the organism's characteristics.
This technique has been used to develop crop varieties that are resistant to disease and can grow under inhospitable conditions. Genetic therapy can go to the root causes of diseases in humans, unlike conventional therapy that focused on treating symptoms.
Information technology has already created a Google, Amazon and eBay, and numerous obscure but money-making businesses. It was knowledge and ideas, rather than investment in physical facilities, that initiated these ventures. The technology also created opportunities for such services as data recovery and Web content development that smaller players can provide.
Cognitive science is for those who are interested in the functioning of the brain. There are cognitive tutors that sense the way a student is approaching problems, and directs him or her along correct channels. This has the result of making learning more effective. Our brain functions can certainly do with a lot of improvement and a cognitive scientist can use his or her know-how to develop tools that can improve things of the mind.
New Technologies Are also Changing Job Scenarios
The job market is looking for people with new skills. Many community colleges are focusing on training up people with the skills in demand in the current jobs market. Information technology skills, for example, is a favorite field of such retraining.
The more ambitious among you can look at the other technologies if these interest you. There are numerous courses, short-term and of longer duration, that can equip you with specific skills.
Emerging new technologies are thus opening up new avenues both for businesspersons and job seekers.
As a chartered accountant with business management qualifications and decades of exposure to business in senior to top level positions, Gopinathan helps small to medium businesses with new business start-up, business performance improvement and marketing. He uses structured business modelling techniques to help with all these, and has launched a business support website to provide the help in a convenient manner irrespective of geographical distances and boundaries.

Latest Technology in Computer Hardware

The rate at which new computer hardware products are arriving in the market is simply mind-boggling. As the technology advances, the size and the price of the devices come down, while the efficiency and capacity increase. The scenario is same in all cases, whether it is about internal components like processor, motherboard, RAM, graphics card, and hard disk or for peripheral accessories like mouse, keyboard, and monitors. Personal computers became popular only before about three decades back. But already there are huge piles of outdated and antique hardware components and devices. This is a tribute to the tremendous rate of development of latest technologies in computer hardware field. Perhaps, the newest entrant into the archeological catalogue of computer peripherals is CRT monitors. The sleek looking LCD monitors are spreading like computer virus.
Data storage devices have attracted considerable attention of the technology developers. New kinds of storage devices such as newer versions of flash memory cards, hard disks using latest technology and disks of ever-increasing capacity are the results of advancement in latest technology in compute hardware. The memory size of the random access memory (RAM) cards is soaring to enable the smooth functioning of graphics animation software packages and streaming video websites. Also, computer motherboards have undergone substantial changes over the years. More and more functions are being added to the motherboard. Also, despite the incredible improvement in performance and functionalities, the price of these components has actually fallen steadily.
The most vital component of a computer is the microprocessor. It is in this field that a battle of developing latest technologies in computer hardware takes place. The pace of development of microprocessor increases as the competition between the major processor chip manufacturing companies, Intel and AMD, intensifies. Both the companies are engaging in a neck and neck competition and continuously outdo each other in introducing new technologies.
In the field of computer peripherals, the latest technology in computer hardware is in developing yet another version of wireless mouse and keyboard. The concept of wireless mouse and keyboard is about a decade old. But the development of these items is still a work in progress. The latest products of wireless mouse and keyboard are said to be highly durable and error free.
Some of the developments in the latest technology in computer hardware are gearing up for changing the present concept of desktop and laptop computers. With new developments making possible the convergence of mobile phone technology and computers, a new breed of fully functional palm-top computers are going to be introduced in near future. With touch screen monitors and without the need for a mouse, these gadgets are likely to become the next big leap in the constantly leaping technological development field.

Reading - Your Key to Technology

We live in a great day and age. Information is readily available at all times. We have cable TV, radio, computer applications and the Internet. We're experiencing information overload most of the time.
Unfortunately, some people are not able to take advantage of the benefits of the Information age. The reasons may range from lack of access to an inability to use information literacy tools. And some people are not interested in the benefits of technology and information.
However, there is only one real barrier to taking advantage of the information age. The irony is most people impose the barrier on themselves. Yes, it is true.
There is one fundamental skill needed to take advantage of all the information around us. Everyone has the skill in varying degrees. The skill is reading. Yes, reading is the only mandatory skill needed to take advantage of the information age. How else can one assimilate all the knowledge available to us?
Now, let's consider why people don't realize reading is their barrier to the information age. The simple answer would be the reason why they are reading. There are two main reasons why people read. The reasons are for pleasure and work.
People read for pleasure and leisure. There are thousands of books published every year on a multitude of topics. The book stores are full of books and magazines. You can read fiction and or non-fiction. The thing about doing anything for pleasure and leisure is you get to it when you can. And there is nothing wrong with that.
People read work related material. There is email, reports, and paperwork of all kinds to be read. And much of this reading can be tedious and boring. Work related reading can cause fatigue and negatively impact reading for any other reason. Outside of the regular reading material for work there are trade journals and magazines to be read. Truly, this kind of reading is enjoyable but your employer may not allot time for it on the clock.
You need to be aware of another kind of reading. This kind of reading will allow you to take advantage of the information age. You should be reading for expert knowledge. Now reading for expert knowledge is not quite the same as reading for leisure or for the job. Reading for expert knowledge has a different end result. The end result of reading for knowledge is to become an authority on a topic. When you read this way, you are reading to gain insights, skills, tips, hints, tricks of the trade, and an insider's working knowledge of a topic. When you read this way, you systematically read trade journals and magazines, articles, and books for a specific period of time. You may read about one topic for a year and then move on to a related topic. Or you may read several books on one topic over a long weekend. Read several authors with opposing views to get a sound overview of any subject or topic. Find other media and opportunities to supplement your quest for expert knowledge. In no time, you will discover that you know more about your topic than the average Joe.
So, how else can you benefit from reading? Reading will give you ideals. Reading will challenge your views, and expose your biases and prejudices. Reading will introduce you to new people and places. Reading will inspire you, tickle you, change you, and tug on your heart strings. Reading will give you many hours of enjoyment. And by the way, reading will make you smart.
